Justin Bieber has recorded his fourth number one album, as ‘Believe’ tops the Billboard 200 this week. The album, spearheaded by lead single ‘Boyfriend’, sold 374,000 copies in its first week, according to figures from Nielsen SoundScan, making it the biggest debut of the year so far. In addition, it is also his own personal best sales week; topping the 291,000 copies sold by his My World 2.0 album in one week in April 2010.
Despite the success, the album has actually fallen slightly short of the initial projections, made on the back of enormous first-day and pre-order sales, which had predicted between 410,000 and 440,000 sales. The album has also failed to eclipse the overall biggest sales week record for 2012, which still belongs to Adele. The British singer’s album ’21′ sold 730,000 copies in the week after her huge Grammy Award success.
The second single from Bieber’s ‘Believe’ album, entitled ‘As Long As You Love Me’, debuted last week at number 21 on the Billboard Hot 100. That placement was based on download sales of 168,000, according to Nielsen SoundScan figures. Island Records will not give the track a mainstream radio push, with the track being promoted to top 40 and rhythmic radio stations in July.
